Affordable cat spay and neuter services are now available through SNIP Central!
The SNIP Central initiative (Spay Neuter Immunize Prevent) was started due to the growing concern of cat overpopulation in Central Oregon. Cats are able to reproduce at the young age of four months and can have multiple litters per year. This has caused the free-roaming cat population to grow exponentially in a short period of time. SNIP Central spay/neuter clinics aim to target outdoor community cats (both feral and indoor/outdoor pets) that may be contributing to the rapid population growth. At this time, we offer two low-cost spay and neuter packages for cats depending on if the cat is feral or friendly.

The friendly cat package is available for pet cats or stray community cats that will willingly approach humans. Kittens must weigh at least 2 lbs to qualify for services. Friendly cats will receive an exam prior to surgery to help assess if they are fit for anesthesia. We recommend any cat over the age of five have blood work performed prior to anesthesia to further evaluate organ function. If elected, this blood work would need to be performed at another veterinary clinic prior to scheduling your appointment with SNIP Central. The friendly cat package includes sterilization, a pain injection, and a tattoo on the abdomen that indicates surgery has already been performed. This small green tattoo is important to prevent future veterinarians from performing surgery on a cat that has already been spayed or neutered. You never know if your cat will end up lost or in a shelter environment and this tattoo will spare your cat from undergoing unnecessary procedures. The tattoo is typically only visible when a cat’s abdomen is shaved just prior to surgery.

The feral cat package is available only to cats that choose to avoid human contact. These cats tend to be aggressive and have to be humanely trapped by caregivers in order to be brought in for surgery. For the safety of our staff, feral cats will only be accepted if they are brought in a trap. A complete physical exam cannot be performed for feral cats prior to surgery due to the risk of injury to staff. All feral cats will receive a rabies vaccination, a pain injection, and a mandatory ear tip. Ear tipping (see picture for example) indicates that the cat has already been sterilized and it allows caregivers to focus their attention on trapping other cats that have not already had surgery.

Vaccination, viral testing, e-collars, microchips, dewormer, flea treatment, and nail trims are available at an additional cost at the time of surgery only. We recommend that all cats be vaccinated against FVRCP and Rabies to protect them from infections in the future. FeLV vaccination is recommended for all outdoor cats as the feline leukemia virus can readily be spread through saliva of other cats.
Online registration is required to reserve a surgery spot with SNIP Central. You will receive additional information regarding your surgery time slot when your registration has been approved. You can find the registration form by scrolling down on this page. |
